Best Western Queen's Hotel Dundee ***
Victorian Heritage
The Queen's Hotel is home to a unique perspective on Dundee's architectural heritage. The lower ground floor Victorian suite features a specially commissioned seven-metre mural inspired by early 20th century architectural drawings by James Thompson - Dundee's visionary city architect and engineer.
The Thompson Mural - a stunning trompe d'oeil panorama - created by local artist Ken Bushe - is a living interpretation of Thompson's 1910 architectural plans for Dundee's waterfront area. At ground level, the viewer stands before a spectacular vista to equal the finest and best known architectural views in Europe.
The Thomson mural depicts a grand plaza and tree-lined boulevard, with a magnificent fountain as a centerpiece between the Royal Arch and other grand buildings.
Look back with us over 125 years of local events and a world history that has helped to shape the unique heritage of the Best Western Queen's Hotel.
The Queen's Hotel has gained an impressive heritage over the 125 years since it was opened in 1878 by Dundee wine merchant Col Smith as a "Station Hotel" in anticipation of the imminent arrival of the railway station in Dundee.
Famously described as the "...swankiest, poshest hotel in Bonnie Dundee..." it has met numerous challenges over the years gaining an enviable affection in the hearts of the locals and visitors alike.
A century and a quarter later, the Queen's Hotel has stood the test of time in serving the people of Dundee. Today it is under the care and direction of owner Gordon Sneddon.
